I like to burn the following five botanicals over charcoal or as dried wands in new home, new moon, and new beginning rituals. Any combination of these is excellent for psychic protection as well as recalibrating the energy of a space.

Palo Santo

(Bursera graveolens) As I’ve already mentioned, I adore this aromatic wood. Its essence carries high energy, spirit healing and cleansing properties, and it unlocks the creative mind. Palo santo is commonly sold as incense in three- to four-inch-long sticks.

Big Sagebrush

(Artemisia tridentata) This fragrant herb has long been used in smudge wands by Native Americans to drive out malevolent spirits and influences, and its purifying scent creates a powerful energy of renewal. It smells like a dark, dry sage with hints of camphor and a smooth, spicy undertone. I find its scent to be tenacious and soothing.
